If you could design your life without limits, what would it look like? The Ideate phase in Designing Your Life (DYL) is your chance to explore that question without fear, without judgment, and without the pressure of being “realistic.”

This is the stage where creativity takes the lead—a space for bold thinking, fresh ideas, and limitless exploration.

Unlike traditional planning, ideation isn’t about narrowing options; it’s about opening the door to as many possibilities as you can imagine. It’s about divergence—generating ideas in abundance, because more ideas mean more opportunities.

As Bill Burnett and Dave Evans remind us: “Ideation is about divergence. We’re trained by our education system to converge, converge, converge. But before we converge, it’s important to get all ideas out there—even the weird, wild, and wacky ones.”

Why Ideation Matters

Your life isn’t a single straight path—it’s a landscape of possibilities. By ideating, you give yourself permission to step beyond the obvious and explore hidden doors you didn’t even know existed.

This approach helps you:

  • Break free from limiting assumptions.

  • Challenge old narratives about what’s possible.

  • Discover new opportunities that align with your values and curiosity.

  • Build confidence that there’s always more than one way forward.

You don’t need to choose the “perfect” future today. You simply need to imagine multiple exciting ones.

How to Ideate Without Limits

This phase is all about abundance, not perfection. Turn off your inner critic and let curiosity lead. Start by asking yourself:

  • What if money, fear, or status didn’t matter?

  • What would I try if success were guaranteed?

  • What’s something I’ve always wanted to do but never gave myself permission to explore?

Write every idea down—even the outrageous ones. The wildest thought might just spark your most innovative move.

Here are ways to keep the creativity flowing:

  • Brainstorm freely: Quantity over quality—more is better.

  • Use visuals: Mind maps, sketches, or vision boards to see patterns and connections.

  • Engage others: Invite friends or mentors into the conversation for fresh perspectives.

One of the most powerful exercises in this phase is creating three Odyssey Plans—three different five-year visions of your life:

  1. Plan One: A continuation of your current path.

  2. Plan Two: A bold pivot—something you’ve always been curious about.

  3. Plan Three: Your wild card—the “no rules, no limits” scenario.

Don’t just write words—draw, diagram, color, make it visual. This exercise isn’t about committing—it’s about expanding your imagination and realizing how many great options exist for your future.

Start Big, Then Think Small

Not every idea has to be a dramatic life shift. Capture the little experiments too:

  • Take a class that excites you.

  • Volunteer in an area you’ve always wanted to explore.

  • Start a hobby that sparks joy.

Small steps often lead to life-changing insights.

The Magic of Collaboration

Ideas thrive in conversation. Share your thoughts—not for approval, but for inspiration. Ask:

  • What opportunities do you see in these ideas?

  • If you were me, what would you try?

A single dialogue can turn a rough idea into a breakthrough.

Your Next Move

Grab a notebook or the Odyssey Planner Workbook and let your imagination flow. Don’t censor. Don’t limit. Just ideate. The future isn’t a single destination—it’s a collection of exciting paths waiting for you to imagine them.
